On Sunday 10th July 2011 at the age of 16, Nick Waddle become the youngest Club Champion of Ravensworth Golf Club beating Joe Fraser's record set just 2 years ago in 2009 when he was just 18, which erased Mark Sewell's long standing record from 1987.
The opening round saw Nick bogey the first, but, birdies at holes 6 and 9 created an excellent one under par front nine of 34. On the back nine Nick made bogeys at 12 and 14, but, with a birdie at the closing hole he carded a level par 70 to lie two shots behind the lowest score of the day of 68, shot by 18 year old Louis Fraser, who had played the back nine in 3 under par.
In the afternoon round Louis's loose 6 at the first saw him turn in 38 and a 3 putt at 17 meant he finished with a four over par 74 to tie with Nick who had already finished on 142 playing steady even nines of 36 to card a 72. The chasing pack of former Champions, Adam Reay, Joe Fraser and Captain Glen Hodges could do nothing finishing joint third on 145.
A play-off was played over holes 1, 17 & 18 to determine the Champion and with par, par, birdie Nick calmly cruised to victory.
Pictured right is Nick with both the Johnston Cup (Club Championship Trophy) and the Curry Vase, donated by Captain Roy Curry in 1969 for the best nett score over the Championship which Nick won by 7 shots on 130 from former Champion Ian Wood on 137.
Below is Nick with his caddy, proud father Chris.

Pictured right is last year's Champion John Parker who made a sterling defence of his title with rounds of 73 & 74 to finish 5 shots behind the young master, and if you look closely, Nick, twelve months ago, had his eyes set well and truly on becoming the Champion of Ravensworth Golf Club. |
